10 things I love about triathlon

1. Packing the bike into the travel case - getting excited
2. Waking up early and going to the airport instead of to work (but i hate flying)
3. The early morning tension from breakfast right up to the fear lining up for the swim - adrenalin !
4. The swim - the sound of the wetsuit sliding through the water
5. Running onto the beach at the end of the swim, it's the sand in the toes !
6. From swim to bike - the first 500m on the bike with the taste of the sea still in the mouth.
7. Finding the rhythm in the run, this takes a while, sometimes as long as 2-3km.
8. The finish line and the feeling of satisfaction and achievement - especially having faced physical and mental difficulties during the course... will i finish, will i hold out...
9. Seeing Esther at the finish line - always happy whatever the performance!!
Voir Esther à l'arrivée - toujours souriante, quelque soit la chrono !!!
10. Tapas in Barcelona after the race - a well-deserved reason to gorge myself with patatas bravas and cold beer !!!!!
11. There are more than 10 things i love about this competition....
Il y a beaucoup plus que dix....

Barcelona Triathlon 2010

Barcelona remains one of the most attractive cities in the world, and the weather in October ideal for sport.
Despite my interrupted training schedule due to my calf strain, i did manage to pull my way around the course without any mishap or injury. This is positive. The time i took - 2h34m07s - is a bit disappointing,  though satisfactory given the circumstances.
Happy ? Yes ! Heureux ? Oui
Satisfied ? More or less ! Satisfait ? Plus ou moins !
Optimistic ? Very ! Optimiste ? Très !
The story ? - l'Histoire ? :
The night - 3 hours sleep in the hotel, due to noisy neighbours waking us at 3am!! i could NOT get back to sleep and was very tired when the 6am alarm rang !!
The swim : Lining up on the beach I was feeling strong and confident enough, though i had no idea what was in store. Little did I know how a wave start of 500 in a small area (around 25m wide) was going to turn out - it didn't take long - just the first 400m!!! They were literally spent avoiding bodies, feet, arms, and simply keeping afloat... i have no idea how many times i was hit, or how many times I swam onto somebody else - each time quickly turning to the right or left - so no rhythm, no speed - this was the washing machine effect I'd not experienced since my very first tri back in 2005 (this is only my 6th ever - having started up this sport in April last year). After the first turn, which i made under the buoy, things settled down and i was able to get going and that great feeling of sliding through the water came back. The next turn, before heading back to the beach came quickly enough, and i was soon waving to Esther on the beach. The 34min time though is a massive 9minutes slower than Paris ! The difference the number of starters obviously had a much bigger effect than i had ever imagined !

The Bike - this transition went well - found the bike and my bag really quickly and off i went. The roads here are perfect for cycling - smooth and flat with the occasional bump. The wind is always a bit of a swirler though, and it seemed to swirl head on whichever direction I was going !! I've done a lot of cycling since August so I thought i'd whizz round the course with my Black Lapierre Xelius and brand new Easton E70 wheels - my legs were having other thoughts though ! I had no energy at all - flat batteries !! Was this the lack of sleep kicking in ? Very probably. I downed an energy gel and felt a bit better, though a nagging doubt was eating away at me that my calf, which i could feel tightening as i got towards the end, was going to give up on me.

The Run - I got into the athletics stadium serving as the transition zone - found my number, but not my bag ! I turned back thinking i'd made a mistake - no - i ran up the aisle again - my bag was nowhere to be seen. Panic ! This can't be true ! I am always really careful about my things - rolling up the wetsuit quickly, gathering things together, making sure i'll be able to get to what i need next, quickly.... then i saw it - pushed to one side under someone else's swim suit - aaarggh ! Anyway, shoe's on, top off, and away... will the calf hold out ? take it easy, keep calm, don't overstretch, careful... km 1, ok, Km 2, ok, drink station,  two sips of Powerade - YUK!!! this is awful - water to take the taste away, ok, Km 3.. critical (this is the time my achilles went on the LD in May), ok, km 4, the Barcelona Zoo on the right, 5km - maybe i'll get through this, exit the Park, up the hill to the Arc de Triomf, Km 6, 7, i'm going to be ok, speed up a bit - nothing there. I will finish, and my leg is fine... the Olympic Towers on the right, then in front of me, a fountain in front, the sun high between the Towers - i turn around, the Familia Sagrada behind me - i smile - this is Barcelona !!!
The sea in view now and the end in sight, the finishing straight, blue carpet - Esther on the left shouting me - a touch of hands and a sprint finish. The leg is fine, the triathlon over - this, i feel, was the most difficult i've ever done. I'm tired, but ok. Photo shoot on the finish line !! Esther is there calling me "My Ironman" !!!
Happy - yes!!!
But I can do better - and now, 5 days later, I WILL do better - i'll be back here in May for the Half-Iron, and again in October for the Full Ironman ! And I know that  i will  be ready !!

Injury and rest - blessure et repos - & KT TAPE

Last Friday I'd planned a one-hour intensive turbo session followed by a one-hour run. I cut the run to 45 minutes as I felt a tightening in my calf, similar to cramp. I knew it was not cramp, because i've had this before - it's a contraction of the gastrocnemius and lengthening of the soleus. So i stopped, trotted slowly home and applied ice - which i have done every day since. I also have a physio treatment - sonor and electro treatment and cryotherapy, which is fantastic ! It is feeling much better and I am confident i'll be fit for Barcelona Olympic Distance (1500m swim, 40km Bike, 10 km run) on the 17th Oct.
I can still swim, using the pullboy (and i have done some light cycling (though this isn't really allowed !)
i'd like to imrove on this time !

Plus, i've just ordered some KT Tape (official site) and am waiting to try it and see if it works as well as others say !

Retour des vacances - Back from Holiday !

It's the beginning of September - not the easiest of times : the end of the holiday and back to the routine of work  !!! I had such a great August - cycling, then running along the Costa Brava coastline and swimming in the Med over the past two weeks...
Plus the Grande Alpe tour has been put off until May - due to timing problems for the other cyclists !
That leaves me the Barcelona Triathlon to really look forward to - a pause - a thought - mmmm - feel better already. Only 6 weeks to go !

Some photos
You can see Calella de Palafrugell in the background, Llafranc closer -
i ran up a steep hill to get this picture !!!

this hill :

along coastline like this :

Despite a severe head cold, i still managed a lot of swimming ! Something about the sea here I love - the morning it's really flat so you can work on speed, and in the afternoon it's really choppy which makes for a lot strength and stamina work -  and all that with the warm sun and the taste of salt !!

September is going to be a big month ! I am going totry and become a real cyclist by completing the route des grandes alpes from Thonon to Menton on the côte d'azur....
12 cols in 4 days
12 cols en 4 jours including the col du l'Isoran, le  col du Télégraphe, le col du Galibier, le col de l'Iozard... i'm tired already/déjà fatigué !!!

Does this mean i'm giving up triathlon and running ? No ! This is all part of my mental preparation for the Ironman i plan for next year.... so i'm spending these two weeks' holiday out on the bike, cycling up any hill i can find, and i'm really starting to enjoy it !!
No !

I LOVED this last year - the swim in the sea, through the high, strong waves !!!
the promo film from the site

And for the pleasure, here's a great Barcelona ad... une pub très drole !

Paris Triathlon 2010

Well, here's the report i promised ! All in all - a thoroughly enjoyable morning.
I drove to Paris on Saturday to pick up the number and leave the bike. I drove back to Esther's, who lives about an hour and a half away to spend the night - opting to not stay in a hotel this time.  So i wake at 4h45, have a quick coffee and breakfast and i'm away by 5h15. 7°c - a bit chilly, but you could see the mist over the fields suggesting this would be a nice sunny day. It was. I arrived at the Trocadero for 6h30 and found a parking space all too easily, watching partygoers spill out of the nightclubs close by - two worlds colliding!! And as if to drive the point home, walking towards the Eiffel Tower the female triathletes were already on the run leg of the Grand Prix sprint event !
Then i had a thought !! I haven't got my chip ! I'd left it in the backpack offered by the organization !! oh no ! Quick thinking - don't panic - sort out the equipment - so i get to the bike, check the tyres and gear setting,  place the shoes, helmet, race n° on the belt, gels in the bike pack (power punch are my tried and trusted),  running shoes, socks... get into wetsuit, goggles round neck, cap in hand... everything's ok. Now the chip !
I ask an official and he disappears into a tent and finds one for me ! Simple. Will it work with my n° ? 169 ?  "Yes, i'll see to it !!", he says. Thank you to the organizers - French efficiency at its best.
Attends ! Il va m'en chercher une autre. Ca va marcher avec mon numéro ? 169 ? OUi, pas de problème !! Et voilà c'est réglé.. facile ! Merci Monsieur l'organisateur !
So that's it ! No problem. It's now 7h20 - the walk towards the swim departure, le pont des invalides, is due to begin at 7h25. The atmosphere if fantastic - the blue sky, the sun, the Tower looking down, the Seine !! Everyone is in a great mood, chatting away. I listen to the exchange of strategies.. stay this side, close to the boats, long strokes... several times i hear this, which confirms my strategy as right - swim to the far side, head straight to the first bridge, then the second, before cutting left towards the foot of the Tower, under the Pont d'Iena. There are officially 1846 swimmers in the Seine at the start - with only one start time ! This, to me was craziness !!!

I found this on You Tube, i'm on the far side, just in front of the big white boat !!!

So i jump in between the ponts de l'Alma & Alexandre III - 23°  - and head out to the far side - smiling like a crazy person, as usual. I love this moment - a mixture of excitement, anxiety, fear and fun ! The Seine is packed with white and pink and red swimhats. I get to the front of the pack and cling to a security canoe - head straight, i tell myself, straight to the pont de l'Alma 500m ahead of me... then we're away ! Head down, stroke, swim, stroke, breathe, two stroke, look up.. I'm swimming along the side of the boats moored along the Seine... i'm alone !! There is nobody in front, and nobody swimming on to my back.... great. Concentrate, breathe, long strokes...under the first of  the 3 bridges (Alma), no problem... i begin to use a three stroke breathing rhythmn almost all the way to the next bridge (la passerelle Debilly) . Still no incident - my strategy was right. The shoulders are turning nicely, i'm rolling and gliding just like in the pool... i begin to cut across towards the exit bank.... i begin to touch a few feet and arms, i kick harder, others seem to move aside for me... smack! a hand knocks my goggles off, pause, back on, away again, hard kicks, under the Pont Iena, the exit, the stairs are packed, it's impossible to get up !!! I finally push through, pausing to let a girl pass (she had to climb under the steps side rail to get out of the water)  - Up to the top - great ! a shower tunnel - i glance at the watch - 8h35 - that means 25 minutes for the swim ! Running on to the bike i'm thinking - that was nearly 3 minutes quicker than last year in Paris ! This is good - I'm amazed at myself - keep moving !

The transition is much quicker too - suit off, helmet on, race n° is already on, socks, shoes... away. Impossible to mount the bike with the crowd, and everyone's slipping on the cobbles !!! i prefer to run on with the bike to the real road, 50m further on... good idea. I'm away. I'm still smiling !! This is fantastic. I'm in with a group already, zigzagging through the early morning Parisian streets - cobbles, careful!! I'd seen the Tour de France and all the falls at the start, especially on cobbles - i'm being extra careful at the turns, bang !! ! a fall, can't stop, can't look back - better to be slower around the bends, and still riding, than lying on the road with a broken bike !
The carbon frame makes such a difference to the comfort - the vibrations are simply absorbed and it's very smooth... we move into the Bois de Boulogne - the Longchamp race track in sight, scene of last years triathlon.

a more complete summary - to the sound of Vanessa Paradis

I latch on to another group, taking it easy... what a difference drafting makes (it is permitted here, but with the number of cyclists it would be impossible to not ride in a group!).  I get round the 180° turns with no problem - the bike feels light and it's not too much of a problem getting speed back up, standing.
Beginning the second tour, a huge crash ahead, one cyclist looks badly injured.... that hurts to see. Again, it reminds me to stay concentrated in a group, hang back. Suddenly i'm cycling alone, it's windy, it's getting a bit tiring now. Then a group arrives, i latch on again and the speed picks up - obviously these were the slower swimmers, but better cyclists....  All the way back to the Seine.

Approaching the Tower I look at the watch - 9h36 - another cyclist asks me the time - "good going", he says. He speeds ahead, but i can't catch him... the Tower is just to the right now, we're back... i slow down - no!! there are still 2 km to go, a loop further up the Seine, across the bridge - I've lost time here - i'm not happy, because i didn't check the course properly - I should have known this !! GGggGgrgrrrr. So i'm about 1h08 for the bike leg, approximately the same as last year - but with a new, expensive bike !!! Next the run.... no time to waste - i want to beat the Barcelona time (2h26) at least.

Running shoes are on and tied quickly, stretch the back first, and away. I have run only 6 times in the past 2 months following the achilles tendon problem... but i feel ok. A drinks station at the exit of the transition zone, then a steep hill up the side of the Trocadero - it's long !! about 4-500m..... i take my time, get the breathing right. Around the bend onto the plateau, the Eiffel Tower at the right. The Tourists are looking perplexed - "we came to see the tower, but there are barriers everywhere, and crazy people panting there way around the streets" - a water fountain !!! so welcoming. Sponge and water station, a descent back to the Seine, turn around and back up to the top of the hill - this is tough ! back across the Pont Alma - the second loop - back up the hill - this is getting difficult - i can feel the lack of training in the legs - up to the top, KM 6,  down again,  7, up again and across the bridge, km 8. The 100KM Millau run comes back to mind - crossing the bridge back into the town of Millau  at KM 98 - just 2 more to go. I'm not looking at the watch again. Past the Tower, continue, KM 9, turn, i glance at the time - just after 10h30, i think... get moving. My legs don't react - this is the lack of running really showing. The blue carpet along the Pont Iena, along the bike zone on the right. Up into the gardens below the trocadero, the finish line.. there's no chrono, yes, it's behind the line - 2 hours, 26 minutes, 50 secs.

I wanted to see 2h25 mins.... i'm the same time as Barcelona 2009, but 10 minutes quicker than Paris 2009 - for a much  more testing course. The run was tough - 49 mins (i did 41mins in Barcelona) !! But i'm happy !! I finished, no mishaps, and nearly 10 minutes faster than a year ago here in Paris.

I heard the organizers want to reach an objective of 3000 participants for next year - and the lure of the Eiffel Tower, and the superb surroundings,  will almost certainly help... i recommend this race to anybody, if only for the pleasure of the lavish post-race refreshments which are excellent - water-melon, cherries, banana, strawberries, chocolate, cheese, bread, cake, water, cereal bars, dried fruit, fruit juice.....and the splendid atmosphere  - pleasant, good humoured - amazing !! Having been disappointed by the atmosphere of the noisy and boisterous Paris Marathon in 2007, i am really happy i came here today..... loved it ! I don't have the same feeling of achievement as last year, which was my first tri, but more a feeling of satisfaction, and contentment.... i CAN do this, and that is precisely WHY i do this !! I'm getting closer to answering that question, WHY ?

And just to confirm - after not appearing in the first set of results, the organisation attributed my chip to my number - the official was right !!
